how you can become a conservation hero

small steps with big impact

LEARN MORE ABOUT YOUR FAVORITE ANIMAL

A search of the internet will lead you to organizations working for the protection and conservation of your favorite animal.  You can offer to volunteer or support them with a donation. Sharing what you know with your family and friends might inspire them to care too.

EAT SUSTAINABLE FISH

Download the Seafood Watch App; click HERE to download the consumer guide according to the State you live in or check the national database on sustainable seafood.

DISPOSE OF TRASH RESPONSIBLY

  • Be mindful of your trash while fishing, boating, and enjoying the ocean.

  • Pick up and properly dispose of trash you find at the beach and in the ocean.

IF YOU SEE A MĀUI DOLPHIN IN THE OCEAN:

  • Avoid approaching Māui dolphins and never swim with them.

  • Ensure there are no more than three vessels (including jet skis and kayaks) within 300 yards of a pod.

  • Do not feed Māui dolphins or dump rubbish and keep noise to a minimum.

  • Report any sightings of Māui dolphins to the New Zealand Department of Conservation Hotline. Click HERE for more information on reporting Māui dolphin sightings.

SUPPORT EXCELLENT ZOOS AND AQUARIUMS

Suggestion from Conservation Hero, Joel Sartore:

"Visit and patronize your local zoo.  Zoos and aquariums are vitally important to conservation today.  Not only do they fund and manage captive breeding programs, but they are increasingly involved in conservation of habitat in the wild.  Find an accredited zoo or aquarium in your area here."
